Wall-E

July 23, 2008 at 11:12 pm (Movies) ()

Wall-E is the ‘cutest’ and ’sweetest’ show ever. Funny how the advertisements before the movie was targeted for kids but yet the cinema was FULL but absolutely no sign of children agred 20 and below. Many cried as well in the movie – it’s like watching the ‘Future’ Adam & Eve story and the ‘re-birth’ of the earth. Limited scripts (perhaps just 10 lines in all).. but managed to touch the audience with laughter, romance, and tears.

Rainbow colours make me cheerful

July 21, 2008 at 7:35 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , )

Rainbow makes me happy! Rainbow makes me smile! And how amazing when it’s embedded as part of our everyday life.

SPECTRAcertainly a new way to read the news

Jan Vormann  – plastering holes with lego blocks!

Fendi – Design your own Baguette (I might ruin it though..)

Oh well – no rainbows in London, but there are rainbows all around.

Just another day in London

July 21, 2008 at 6:46 pm (Places) (, , , )

Out for lunch in East London which reminds me a lot of ‘Mamak’ @ Lahore One. Good but not as spicy compared to what you can get at Kayu.

Then we headed off to Whole Foods Market @ Kensington. I was very ‘jakun’ to see these and took pics of them while my fren ran off to hide behind the aisles pretending not to know me.

Choose your nuts & seeds and make ur own peanut butter!!

I thought that this was cool! Certainly helps save some space.

Cypriots march – Guess the Turkish PM must be in London for a visit.

City workers carve nature reserve out of scrubland

CITY workers are among volunteers who have spent their spare time transforming overgrown scrubland into a wildlife haven.
The Belsize Wood nature reserve will be opened by Camden Mayor Councillor Dawn Somper on Sunday. Volunteers from City consultants KPMG, EHF Energy and University College London helped clear rubbish, create new paths, put up bird boxes and trim back trees.

Inverted Pyramid Society

July 19, 2008 at 11:07 pm (Places) (, , )

Having 8 weekends left in London has left me with a list of things to do in London. Indeed, everyday is different and I realise that there are things that can only happen here and not in KL. Everyday there’s always something new to surprise you but that element of surprise has turned into a norm in London. A beautiful day in Hampton Court Palace and the gardens was money well spent. We managed to find our way our of the WORLD FAMOUS MAZE Twice!! (Because we didn’t realise we found the exit).

After making our way back to Central, we had dinner at Cecconi’s @ Burlington Gardens.

The food is good – nothing special. But the atmosphere was relaxing. My friend asked if I will miss dining in London. I said ‘No’ – it’s just a different experience and type of food that I will get in KL. Making our way to Leicester Sq, I was ’surprised’ to see 2 portable metal detactors where police were checking the people around there. I wonder who gets chosen to pass under them?

In vain of our search for entertainment – we decided to have coffee at Konditor & Cook

Topic of conversation was pretty much about – the work experience in London  showed us how ‘class-driven’ the society is – a pyramid society. The politicians are trying to create an ‘inverted pyramid society’ – by seemingly trying to make everyone rich. How? By suppressing the middle class and giving it to the poor while leaving the rich untouched. Or are they? However, we want a Utopian society i.e. having a flat structure society where everyone is equal – sounds like a perfect communist state. But do we? Whatever it is, I am happy with my lifestyle – it works and the little dramas of my life keep me amused.

On a lighter note, the gingerbread cookies are the small little things that I won’t see in KL.

Priceless

Priceless brilliantly rejuvenates the selfish pluck of that powered Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

The cute-petite-beautifully-dressed (loved every piece of her garments from head to toe) Audrey Tautou and the sad eyed Gad Elmaleh definitely left me smiling throughout.

The End of Mr. Y by Scarlett Thomas

July 17, 2008 at 9:25 pm (Books) (, )

..Just pretend for a minute that there is something called a curse and it exists and it is a thing. Where does it come from? That’s what we need to ask.’

‘Do we?’

‘Yes. Is it something magical, or is it a prophecy that comes true because you make it come true? Or is it even just nothing at all, just a way of explaining bad things that happen to us that are actually random. I may ask: my do I have an infestation of mice? Did someone curse me? Or did I just leave too much food out one day to tempt them? Or is life just as simple as there are mice?

……’What if it isn’t people who make curses?’ I say.

….’Ha,’ says Wolf. ‘ You think curses are made by gods.’

….’No, of course not. It’s just a hypothetical question. Can something be created in language independently of the people who use the language? Can language become a self-replicating system or….’

_______

Never have I thought to ‘blame’ the language – curses to me are always related to beliefs, culture or even environment. Perhaps the fact that humans need to create an illusion to blanket their unfortunate situations or mishaps. When are we cursed? or is it fate? These are the usual arguments .. not the mere existence of language — the accidental creation of a word

Whale Ride

July 17, 2008 at 9:05 pm (Uncategorized) (, )

My current mission:

barisanreform.wordpress.com

Perhaps – in line with his speech below – the need to uphold such challenge. Thank you ‘Dacing’ group

Excerpt of Razaleigh’s speech at Banker’s Club -

Our politics remain a politics of personalities rather than of issues and ideas. Of patronage rather than results. When personality dominated politics degenerates you see the destruction of reputations, intrigues, spy scandals, succession plans and whatnot as strategems to resolve leadership contests, rather than the Constitutional and democratically provided avenue of seeking an elected mandate. When group dominated by personality politics comes under challenge the leaders dig in call for ‘unity’ – meaning they are not to be challenged – and hold the country hostage to their career plans.

___________

Our economic policy remains haphazard, driven by whims and special interest projects rather than by a cohesive design geared to shape areas of distinct national competitive advantage. The stillborn ‘Corridor’ projects do not seem to have been thought out as part of a cohesive national economic strategy. Like so much we have done recently, they seem ad hoc and uncoordinated in their selection of specialisations. The term economic corridor now inspires skepticism rather than confidence. Meanwhile, the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) which used to coordinate and plan our economic strategy, has been largely bypassed under this administration. We need to staff the EPU with talented professionals again, not political appointees.
